It’s been a while since my last blog post so here’s a few photos from my latest trip to Norway. I’m back home now and pretty busy editing footage from the trip. We’re putting together a short film again. Hopefully we can finish the edit soon.

We spent most of this trip near Trondheim, in Harbak and Vingsand, and last stop was the Lofoten Islands as soon as it stopped snowing up there. Harbak and Vingsand were definitely worth the trip, but Lofoten didn’t quite match my expectations. While the weather turned out to be really good around Trondheim, in Lofoten the weather was more unstable than I could even imagine. We basically had to take advantage of every moment it didn’t rain. The weather seemed to be more calm at night, so we started climbing at night, not that it really mattered when you climb since the sun did not set at all.

First Ascent of The Diamond

I managed to do the first ascent in one day and that’s why I didn’t think it was quite hard enough to be 8B+, so I gave it 8B. We’ll see what other people think of the grade. Regardless of the grade The Diamond is an amazing problem. It must be one of the best boulders I’ve climbed in Europe. The photo above unfortunately doesn’t do justice for the problem. I’ll try to get better photo from someone and we also have video footage of the send.

First Ascent of Where’s the Paradise?

Eventually we got tired of the Lofoten weather and left a couple days early. I might be going back again soon possibly to try to finish the Greg Valentino project and try to find a new area. On the drive back home we made a couple quick stops and I ticked Lada Miestä Kuljettaa Assis 8A+ and Paddington which I think deserves a downgrade to 8A after I climbed it 3 times in a row.

Midnight Madness ?      First Ascent

Kilian Fischhuber, Adam Ondra, Johanna Ernst, Angela Eiter, Cody Roth, Nalle Hukkataival, Jorg Verhoeven, Hanjorg Auer, Much Mayr, Jerome Meyer, Michele Caminati, Lucas Preti: cos’hanno in comune questi celebri nomi dell’arrampicata oltre al fatto di essere tra i più forti climber al mondo?

Sono tutti giovani e indossano scarpette La Sportiva certo, ma da qualche tempo sono anche accomunati dal fatto di appartenere al nuovo team di “ambassadors” La Sportiva, ovvero al team di ambasciatori ufficiali del marchio all’interno della climbing community. Li vedrete spesso quindi agli eventi organizzati da La Sportiva e saranno ancor più coinvolti nelle operazioni di marketing dell’azienda di Ziano di Fiemme.

Per “presentarli” al meglio, il “marketing team Laspo” ha realizzato con loro una serie di video-interviste condotte personalmente da Pietro Dal Pra durante una recente visita degli ambassadors presso lo stabilimento produttivo di Ziano. Le interviste si sono tenute in particolare sui materassoni della palestra boulder interna dell’area ricerca e sviluppo ed è stata un’occasione particolare anche per gli atleti stessi di confrontarsi tra di loro prima, e con le insidiose domande di Pietro poi.

Ecco a voi quindi la prima video-intervista della serie, apre le danze il campione del mondo di boulder in carica Kilian Fischhuber.

Nella prima giornata soleggiata di questa estate 2010, a San Leonardo in Val Passiria (BZ) si è tenuto uno dei primi contest di boulder sull’acqua del nord Italia. Sole, cloro, acqua, musica, scarpette e costumi da bagno sono stati gli ingredienti di un pomeriggio intenso e frizzante. Special guest Cody Roth e i suoi capelli.

Ciao Kilian! The season just begun in the best possible way! How do you feel?
I feel somehow relieved. I started the season 2009 with a 23rd place, actually my worst result ever and this year it has started much better, as you said in the best possible way. I am also happy, of course!

You’ve been shocking us with an impressing steadiness of results since quite a few years now. We’d like to know how you manage it…how did you prepare this world cup season?
I think my steadiness is a result of my versatility. I can boulder hard on any angle and surface ad I do not prefere a certain set of holds. I like the diversity of bouldering and it seems as if it likes me too… I have trained as usual: In the gym in Innsbruck and on the cliffs around the city.

Innsbruck and it’s “school” are unanimously recognised as one of the leading climbing scene in the world. Is this scene important to you? Do you find motivation from your training surroundings?
Of course! The scene is very important and we push each other. It is easy to find a climbing partner and someone who motivates you.

We loved to see you at Melloblocco, as much as we were impressed in seeing you finding an “easy” way out on one of the toughest boulders (Crazy Snake 8b in less than 30 minutes). You have an impressing list of RP both on boulders and on rock, including Action Directe 9a, shortly followed by a quick repetition of Glowacz’s multipitch “Des Kaisers neue Kleider “. How important is climbing on rock to you?
Rock climbing is absolutely essential to my sport. The trips around the world to various bouldering and routeclimbing areas is my motivation but also justification to the endless hours on plastic. Success during competitions have a similar effect.
Climbing is somehow very complex but after doing it for more than 15 years I have realized that I need to indulge into other activities as well. On one hand I try to climb different stuff, such as boulders, routes, multi pitch and competitions and on the other hand I try to focus on my studies and other sports.

How important is for bouldering competitions to be a “vertical allrounder” and to have such a wide range of different physical abilities?
Boulder competitions and the results of them are mainly influenced by the routesetters. The walls usually vary from flat to steep at every comp but the routesetters are like the composers of a play. If they make it dynamic and powerful those climbers who are good at that will win. If we have to climb route-like boulders I am sure that also some routeclimbers can beat the core boulderers. Adam Ondra is an exception to this. He can do both at the same level. I am sure he will challenge me a lot. However, I did not feel any rivalry towards him. He is such an excellent climber and it is fun to see how he solves problems. I hope it is the same for him too!

Your style is clean, without hesitations, powerful and elegant. Is it hard to keep concentrating during a final? How do you manage?
Concentration is just as important as a certain grade of nervosity. Both influence ech other and the climber. I always try to remind myself that my only opponent in a competition is the wall and my goal is to reach the top. Climbing from A to B from start to top. That’s all there is. Doing so AND enjoying it is my aim. It occured twice in my career that I competed at a very important competition, that I had to start last and that I had just one try to fix my victory. I managed it both times. When I think back to that (Vail 2008 and Greifensee 2010) I am more nervous now than I was at that time.

I’ve heard your’re a great skier as well and that you enjoy freeriding during climbing off Seasons. How important is to you to be able to always be in the mountains in its different variations?
I would not call myself a great skier, but thank you anyways! Yes, i like other sports, be it skiing or mountain biking. Doing other things besides climbing gives you more a independent view on the sport and it helps you to reflect yourself critically. Climbing is not everything, yet a lot!

Anna (Stöhr N.d.r.) was 9th in Greifensee. Does it help to share training and competitions with your girlfriend? What would you like to tell her after this last competition?
I usually train and travel with Anna and we can help each other and push each other. I was really sorry for her since she should have been in the finals in my opinion. I hope she can show her real strenght in the following comps!

You’re graduating in physical education. How do you like university?
I study English and Sports (physical education) to become a teacher. At the moment I am at the library, writing about Mark Twain. Some parts of the university education are interesting some less. I hope to finish my studies within the next 3 years.

This year you had a great result in Military World Championships Lead category. Will we soon see you back in Lead World Cups?
I don’t think that I will compete in Lead World Cups soon again. I really like the sport but I am afraid that if i had to train for lead as well i would burn out and start hating training at all. Consequently I would stop also boulder comps and that’s too bad an idea. Let’s stick with bouldering comps and havin’ fun on rock

Kilian, not that we complain about it but…why always KATANA J?
Katana is just my shoe. It is simple and practical. I like the velcro system and the shape of the shoe. I am sure I could climb with Miura VS but why change a winning team?

Did you try Katana Laces? What do you think about them?
Katana Laces are the perfect shoe for vertical or slightly overhanging rocks, just as at the cliffs around Innsbruck. I have used it quite a lot and I will defenitely order another pair soon.

La katana è la spada lunga giapponese. L’arma era portata di solito dai membri della classe guerriera insieme al wakizashi, o spada corta. La combinazione delle due armi era rappresentativa del potere e dell’onore dei samurai, i guerrieri del feudatario. Permetteva di stoccare, ma era usata principalmente per colpire con dei fendenti. I samurai, che venivano da un addestramento lungo e solenne, erano estremamente abili nel maneggiarla a due mani.

Ciò che affascina di più della katana è la sua costruzione, il cui processo era incredibilmente raffinato. Veniva forgiata alternando strati di ferro acciaioso con percentuali variabili di carbonio, e l’alternanza degli strati le conferiva la massima resistenza e flessibilità. Un cubetto di acciaio veniva scaldato, battuto e poi ripiegato su se stesso più volte. Ad ogni piegatura raddoppiava il numero degli strati, e con quindici operazioni si arrivava a 32768 “veli” metallici sovrapposti.
Successivamente si lavorava sulla forma e sulle dimensioni della lama. Il filo veniva ripetutamente temprato e il processo di affilatura era ancora laborioso, fatto con pietre abrasive sempre più fini.
Anche manico e fodera, in legno di magnolia, erano assai importanti e quindi costruiti con altrettanta cura.

Da questo pezzo di arte giapponese prendeva il nome, otto anni fa, una scarpetta da arrampicata La Sportiva. Allora si voleva costruire un prodotto non troppo estremo, che calzasse le esigenze di molti tipi di scalatori, comodo da indossare grazie ai suoi velcri, ma performante sulla roccia. Il processo di sviluppo era stato lungo e non privo di difficoltà, ma il risultato assolutamente oltre le più ottimistiche aspettative.
La Katana è diventata in seguito una scarpetta cult. Negli anni ha soddisfatto le esigenze degli arrampicatori di medio livello, come quelle dei migliori in assoluto. Ogni volta che si va a scalare, in qualsiasi tipo di falesia, è forse la scarpetta che si può vedere di più. Comoda ai piedi di molti, compagna fidata dei “top” nelle migliori performance, su tutte le inclinazioni, perfino usata in tutte le gare dal vincitore di quattro coppe del mondo di boulder.
Ma si poteva fare un altro prodotto che affiancasse uno di tanto successo mantenendone le caratteristiche di base? Mai mettere sbarre sulla strada dell’ inventiva e dell’evoluzione, questo mi hanno insegnato i tecnici della ricerca e sviluppo in La Sportiva.
E con questo motto siamo partiti due anni fa a lavorare sulla sorella giovane dell’ ormai classica Katana velcro. E ancora una volta prove su prove, ai piedi di alcuni scalatori del team La Sportiva. Entusiasmi, delusioni, passi avanti, scelte da prendere, decisioni… Ad ogni passo sempre tanta attenzione a mantenere buoni i difficili equilibri strutturali che deve sempre avere una scarpetta da arrampicata. Ad ogni passo lo sguardo avanti, verso un’evoluzione del prodotto per alcuni suoi usi in verticale. Ad ogni passo attenzione e passione.

Ma cosa è stato cambiato sulle Katana Laces rispetto alle velcro? Per usare una metafora che riporta alla spada giapponese, fondamentalmente, abbiamo ripreso in mano la “vecchia” Katana e l’abbiamo “affilata” al meglio, nelle sue consolidate buone caratteristiche.
Inserito un altro strato, il P3, che ne garantisce la forma appena arcuata verso il basso per tutto il corso della sua vita, leggermente “strutturata” ed assottigliata la punta, rivisto il tallone in ottica di renderlo più preciso e sicuro, ovviamente cambiato il tipo di chiusura, ora in lacci, che fanno si che la scarpetta diventi corpo unico col piede. Poi un particolare nuovo sulle scarpette da arrampicata: solitamente si mette all’interno della pelle un materiale tessile che da struttura all’intera tomaia-scarpetta garantendone la stabilità e limitandone l’allungamento nel tempo. Nelle Katana lacci questo materiale è stato messo all’esterno della pelle. Tale piccolo ma importantissimo particolare fa si che il suddetto elemento di rinforzo lavori in una sinergia più efficace con tutta la bordatura in gomma, e che la pelle, più confortevole, resti a contatto con il piede.
Tutto questo per un prodotto, a detta di quelli che lo stanno utilizzando, unico nella precisione, soprattutto su piccoli appoggi.
Precisione, appunto una caratteristica del taglio che hanno le lame affilate, se utilizzate da mani ferme ed attente…
